Enclosure Setup / Guides

What size enclosure does my reptile need?

The old pet store advice (a 20 gallon for a leopard gecko, a 40 for a bearded dragon) has been replaced. Here are the adult minimums keepers use now.

Adult minimums, length x depth x height

Why bigger

A bigger enclosure is not only more room. It is a longer gradient from the hot basking spot to the cool side, so the animal can choose its own temperature, and a UVB gradient from bright to shade. A small tank gets hot all the way through.

Height for climbers

Arboreal species (crested and gargoyle geckos, chameleons, tree frogs) use height more than floor: an 18 x 18 x 24 is a minimum for one adult crested gecko.

Enter your enclosure in the planner for a verdict for your species, then the plan to set it up.
